Every year, the boats in the Alexandria marina get decorated with a Holiday theme, and lit in a festive manner. On the evening of the first Saturday of December, over 50 power boats, sail boats and even the District's Fireboat parade up and down the Potomac between Alexandria and Washington Harbor, culminating a weekend long series of Holiday festivities in Old Town Alexandria. The decorations compete in many different categories, including "best in show" and the like.
For the last five years, Krug/ Sevea has organized a parallel competition, inviting Design Firms in the area to decorate model boats provided by Krug/ Sevea, in the same spirit as the real boats of the "Parade of Lights." Within their Waterfront showroom, and while watching the parade and feasting on delicious food and plenty of drinks, one by one the model boats show up totally transformed into their new incarnations, which can range from "Holiday-classic" to completely "out-of-the-box" interpretation of the Holiday Spirit. Just as in the "real" boat competition going on outside the windows of the Showroom, the designs of the model boats are put to the scrutiny of our peers, and the awards determined by their vote. After the event, the boats are distributed as holiday decorations to local pediatric hospitals to bring some of the Holiday spirit to those less fortunate children, who have to spend the Holidays away from their families. In addition Sevea offers in the name of the winning firms. a monetary donation to local charities who provide holiday food baskets to those in need.
