Building Construction + Design recently honored the Intelligence Community Campus – Bethesda (ICC-B) project with a bronze award during the magazine’s 20th annual Building Team Awards. In addition to evaluating the design, engineering, and construction quality of each entry, judges also considered how each project team collaborated to resolve challenges during the design process. As Lead Architect for Interiors of ICC-B’s new 220,269-SF Centrum Building, DBI teamed with Leo A Daly (Lead Design Architect), AECOM (Architect of Record), and the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (Contractor) to develop the design of the building’s main reception, amenity gallery, café, fitness center, market space, credit union, 500-seat auditorium, 500-seat cafeteria, health unit, and office spaces. The project’s overall challenge was to transform the dated and disjointed campus into a unified central hub serving 16 intelligence agencies. The team achieved this objective through the skillful design and situation of the Centrum Building, which links the campus’s three existing buildings; creating a consistent and interrelated architectural style throughout the campus—inside and out; and enhancing the site’s landscaping and streetscaping features.
