DBI participated in this year’s Gingertown, a holiday-themed event that brings together architects and designers to craft a mini-city using gingerbread, icing, and other treats as building materials.  Interior Designers, Sarah Gottlieb Benjamin, Mandy Harshman, Anne Regan, Leslie Davis and Kaitlin Dyer rolled up their sleeves to create “Lifesavers Hospital” from large pieces of gingerbread, icing, Starbursts, Twizzlers, Peppermints, and of course, Lifesavers candy.  Special features of Lifesavers Hospital included a sustainable green roof with a water well, a healing courtyard made from Pop Rocks and Nerds, a rooftop helipad made from Twizzlers, and column made from a twisted lollipop to support the cantilevered gingerbread and Hershey’s chocolate bar roof.

Once completed, team members carefully placed their gingerbread buildings into the Gingertown University Campus to complete the Master Plan.  The structures are then donated and put on display at local hospitals, health care facilities and community support organizations to help spread the message of joy and hope during the holidays.

DBI was ecstatic to be a sponsor of this event that also raises money for local charities.  Gingertown beneficiaries include the Children’s National Medical Center, Deanwood Rehabilitation & Wellness Center, Martha’s Table, My Sister’s Place, St. Elizabeths Hospital, So Others Might Eat, The Washington Home, and The Wendt Center for Loss & Healing.
